I still wish it weren't LR2, LR3, LR4 but Freelander 2, Disco 3 and Disco 4.

Sweet article. I still am not digging those taillights.

Yes, in Europe you can get the 3.0L V6 Diesel that gets 30.4 MPG. 242HP and 443Lbs of of torque. What gives, I'll take one of those!

Yeah I saw tons of them both times I was there, even drove a Diesel Disco 3 at Solihull and a Diesel Defender 110 with 28 miles on the odometer.

Screw the EPA, I'm putting a diesel in my Freelander if it's engine ever goes out on me. lol

Tex, don't pin it on EPA.  And I don't say that just because I work for the EPA.

There are three primary reasons.
1) Lack of acceptance of diesels by the general population;
2) Cost of diesel fuel, driven by taxes and fees aimed at commercial vehicles; and
3) Production cost, since most diesel passenger cars are built in Eroupe.

Here's a article on 65 mpg Ford as an example:

Well yeah, a diesel is more expensive short term than a gasoline.

1) I accept a diesel. The millions of people in the USA with a Cummins, Powerstroke, Volkswagen diesel, GM diesel etc accept them.

2) Look at a Powerstroke F250, my dad's truck is a 2000 7.3L that gets 22mpg and weighs 9,000 lbs. A gasoline 5.4V8 would get half that and die around 150,000 miles probably. This diesel has over 240,000 miles and runs as good as new.

3) I'll use Land Rover for this example, let's say a diesel Freelander 2 for sale in the USA sales for $3,000 more than a gasoline (not sure if that's what it would be, but for example). So it's a $3,000 option. Just like a Powerstroke is an option on F250. I'll refer to number two for the cost. Long term, a diesel is cheaper. They get better mileage, therefore pollute less (on the basis less fuel is burned) and diesels have something everyone likes, torque.

On a side not, am I the only one who thinks it's stupid when someone puts dual stack exhaust on a Ford/Chevy/Dodge diesel? They have single factory exhaust, why do a dual exhaust?!?! Or even worse when they cruise around town like it's a sports car with the tow mirrors extended and not pulling a trailer.

lol

I don't disagree with your assessment of diesel being more economical in the long-run at all.  I'd love for my D2 to be diesel and for Rover (and other US and other manufacturers to make) diesels more available here.

The first point I made is the driver - the general public hasn't accepted diesel.  And although we and others, whether they run Jeeps, Toyotas or whatever, would accept diesels, we're a small segment of the population.  And my bet is a significant percentage of us bought our trucks used.  So manufacturers aren't going to hear our cries in the dark for diesels.
